Jandakot Airport – Spotting Guide

Jandakot Airport (IATA: JAD, ICAO: YPJT) is an Australian general aviation airport located near Perth International in Western Australia. It’s the major general aviation airport in WA and one of the busiest airfields and largest aviation training bases in Australia. Below you will find the three major spots that local spotters used otherwise you can easily drive around the airport and find places throw the fences where you can take pictures and leave.

Why visiting Jandakot Airport? Jandakot may interesting about the numbers of flights of small props aircraft during a day. Lot’s of Cessna, Grob, Piper, Pilatus, helicopters, Beechcraft, Waco, Tiger Moth, Air Tractor, Robin, Partenavia, Extra 300, etc. You will be able to get some Singapore Airlines Training School but also China Southern Airlines Training School which are operating on Cessna’s.

General Info	Nothing special

	Spot #1 – Viewing Area
WHERE	Getting there is easy – from Roe Highway (near Kwinana Freeway), take Karel Avenue exit and follow the signs to Jandakot Airport, passing Spud Shed on the way. You will reach a roundabout and need to turn right, along Eagle Drive. As you go up and just over the hill past the control tower, the entrance is on your left.

WHAT	220 metres from centreline of runway 06L/24R. Excellent views of traffic landing on runway 06L and taking off runway 24R, which are generally aircraft arriving from or departing to Jandakot (e.g. RFDS). 116 metres from centreline of taxiway which runs parallel to runway 06L/24R. Most aircraft taxy along here if runway 06L or 12/30 are in use. 144 metres from helipad used by training helicopters. 80 metres from the grass parking area used by firefighting helicopters (‘Helitacks’). 70 metres from southern apron, where aircraft of China Southern and Air Australia park. Excellent views of aircraft taxying into and from the southern apron. TIME	Best from 1100 to sunset.

MISC.	Food and drink available. Café Hours: Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 3.30pm; Saturday, 9am to 2pm; Sunday, closed.

	Spot #2 – Royal Aero Club of WA
WHERE	Getting there is easy – from Roe Highway (near Kwinana Freeway), take Karel Avenue exit and follow the signs to Jandakot Airport, passing Spud Shed on the way. You will reach a roundabout and need to turn right, along Eagle Drive to the end.There is a public car park (ticket machines parking) opposite to the Aero Club.Alternatively, Transperth operates a bus service (routes 515 and 516) between Murdoch Station and Jandakot Airport.Located to the north of Runway.

WHAT	245 metres from centreline threshold of runway 06L. Excellent views of traffic landing on runway 06L and taking off runway 24R, which are generally aircraft arriving from or departing to Jandakot (e.g. RFDS). 230 metres from centreline threshold of runway 12. Excellent views of traffic landing on runway 12, which can include aircraft arriving from or departing to Jandakot (e.g. RFDS) as well as training aircraft conducting circuit training. 140 metres from centreline of taxiway which runs parallel to runway 06L/24R – most aircraft taxy along here if runway 06L or 12/30 are in use. Rooftop and first floor: Excellent views looking down onto aircraft parked close to the Aero Club building, to the south, east and west. View of aircraft of Royal Aero Club and China Southern. Ground floor: Excellent ground-level views of aircraft, unless an aircraft is parked in the way. Ground floor and rooftop: In the open, so no reflections. First floor is enclosed and shaded, sheltered from rain and sun. MISC.	Muzz Buzz Café – food and drink available. Café Hours: Mon – Fri 7am to 3pm; Saturday 10am to 3pm; Closed on Sunday.

FOCAL LENGTH	Recommended : 18-500mm

	Spot #3 – Bell Ct road
WHERE	The spot is located in the north of the airport so from spot 1 follow “Eagle Dr” until the roundabout continue strait onto “Compass Road” and follow the road until to reached the end of it.

WHAT	Only arrivals runway 24R and aircraft calibrations. You can’t park here so stay close to it, do what you want to do and leave.

TIME	From approx 1300 to sunset.

MISC.	There is nothing there so bring what you need with you or drive to the Aviators Cafe to have some drinks and foods.

Very good information much appreciated.
My friend and I are going to be visiting Australia for a two week spotting trip.
Can I ask if it’s possible to visit school of flying companies to take a look in their hangers or a tour maybe.
