Treviso Airport – Spotting Guide

Treviso airport (TSF/LIPH) recorded more than 3 Mio passengers in 2023.It is located 5 km from the city centre and adjacent to the main motorway networks allowing access to the main cities in the region as well as the regional capital Venice. The main airlines operating there are Ryanair, Wizz Air, Malta Air and Buzz with their 737s and A320/A321. There are also some charter and private jets flights.

The airport is divided into a small military and a civil part. Initially it was only a huge military airport from 1963 to 1992, but the main base transferred to Rivolto (Fercce tricolori base). These days military movements are quite rare. It is only used as an AMX maintenance workshop (3rd Aircraft Maintenance and Armament Department).

When the civil part was opened and the partnership with Venice was strengthened, it became one of the most important airports in the north. Treviso is not such a friendly airport and does not guarantee many spotting points so don’t draw so much attention because the spots south of the runway are close and visible from the tower.

Terminals	There is one terminal for all flights.
Spotting Information
Ladder	Only for spot 3 it is recommended.
Car/Public Transport	Car is not necessary, all the spotting point can be reach by foot using bus transportation.
Drinks/Food	Near spot 1 is a shopping center. Furthermore there are supermarkets and restaurant in the village of Quinto.
Hotels	There are several b&b near the airport and a hostel but no one with a special view on the field.
Season	More flights during the summer season. Bad weather in the winter months, especially fog.
Security	No problem with security in general but keep a attention at spot 3 as it is visible from the tower. Avoid the southern area around the military part of the field.
Runway Usage
General Info	Because of noise restrictions, usually landings 07 and 25 for take-offs. In some particular hours ( 90% during afternoon) landing and take-off from rwy 07. Check NOTAM.

	Spot #1 – Flight School – GA ramp
WHERE	This spot is inside the parking lot of the flight school of Treviso, just next to the airport terminal. Parking at this spot is not possible as there is a barrier, preventing the entrance. So park at the shopping center “Antonio Canova”and walk until this point. By public transportation use bus number 6 from train station and get off in front of the airport.

WHAT	Perfect place for private jets and helicopters that use this ramp and other planes that use the taxiway B to exit from the runway.

TIME	Afternoon after 4 pm due to sun is in front of you. Backlit during the winter period.

MISC.	You have to shoot through the mesh as the fence is very high and its not possible to place a ladder. No problem with security.

FOCAL LENGTH	CL605 = 120mm; PC-12 = 300mm; G550 = 300mm

	Spot #2 – Fishing lake – Arrival 07
WHERE	This spot is located near a little lake and a fish restaurant. From the terminal drive westwards on Via Noalese until the second roundabout. Take the last exit into Via Nogariè and drive until you have reached the restaurant. Park there and step on the grassy area south of the approach lights. Search for the preferred position there to shoot the arrivals. By public transportation use number 6 that start from train station, pass the first spot and continue until the gas station called TAMOIL. There is a stop before the roundabout and in front of you there is a supermarket. Exit there and walk to the restaurant and the field.

WHAT	Perfect for arrival 07.

TIME	In winter all day long. During mid summer season backlit during early morning and from afternoon on.

MISC.	There are supermarkets and good bars at the main road and a good fish restaurant. No problems with security. Arrivals are still above the fence hence no ladder is needed.

FOCAL LENGTH	Depends on the position but 50-300mm are fine

	Spot #3 – Old Airport – All movements
WHERE	This spot is located near the old part of the airport along the fence. You can reach it by foot from point 2 by walking on the trail along the fence. Spot in the area beginning from the turning pad of 07 and the end of an old building. By public transportation use number 55 from train station and get off at the military entrance of the airport. From there you can walk along the fence to the position.

WHAT	From here you can photograph all 07 movements. Also a good position when they use the 07 turning pad (07 departures and 25 arrivals). For 25 departures stand a bit back from the fence.

TIME	For the runway in winter all day long. During mid summer season backlit during early morning and from afternoon on. For the turning pad from afternoon until sunset.

MISC.	A ladder es recommend but you can also shoot through the mesh. Latter is difficult especially for the fast 07 approaches. Pay attention on this spot cause the military zone and the tower is nearby. Put the ladder at the fence when there is a movement only.

FOCAL LENGTH	70-150 mm for all the planes
