January 17, 2021Landivisiau Air Base – Spotting Guide
Landivisiau Air Base (-/LFRJ) is located between Brest and Morlaix in the northwestern end of France. This navy air base has an important geographical position due to its proximity to the atlantic ocean just a few kilometers away. The base was opened in february 1965 as the Soviets announced to built up a strong navy fleet for the northern sea and thereby, the French navy relocated parts of its fleet from the south to the north – a new base was needed and built here close to the important military port in Brest. LFRJ started as base for fighters only, but later a new home for schooling and connection aircraft within the navy was also established here (inlcuding Falcon 10 for example). Over the years, Landivisiau hosted a NATO tiger meet for example and played a role in the airfight against Lybia, but is not a super special base. However, you can see French Grumman E2, Falcon 50, plenty fighters and sometimes also tanker like C135.

Spotting Information | |
Ladder | Neither recommended, nor needed at all! |
Car/Public Transport | Definitely needed, public transport is poor here. |
Restrooms | No facilites around. |
Drinks/Food | No facilites around at all. |
Hotels | Nothing around here, but plenty in the area. |
Season | Summer offers better weather and thus more training maybe, therefore the light on this runway direction is better from october till march. |
Security | Police checks along the fence a lot, so keep a very low profile at spot #5. In general, we recommend to don’t display your camera at any spot for a long time in order to avoid attention. Remember, this is an active military base! Be careful regarding the military police and the gendarmerie. It is strictly forbidden to take photos of the area inside the base! |
Runway Usage | |
General Info | The runway was just renumbered from “08/26” to “07/25” in late 2020 – satelite images may not be actual right now! |
07/25 | Single runway operations, runway used in 25 direction more often though. |
Spot #1 – Bodilis – 25 Arrivals | |
---|---|
WHERE | This is the major spotting point at LFRJ and located just north of the village of Bodilis. You have to follow the D30 northbound in Bodilis and shortly after leaving the village, you can take the little road on the left to a little parking where you can leave your car and then walk a few steps north to the “little bin area” from where you can shoot nicely. |
WHAT | Arrivals on runway 25. |
TIME | Useable all day in winter, in summer from later morning till afternoon. |
MISC. | Nothing directly here except some parking bays and big trash bins. Village of Bodilis is just south of you where you may find something. |
FOCAL LENGTH | 200-400mm ATL2 = 235mm / E2 = 340mm |
Spot #2 – Fields East – 25 Arrivals | |
---|---|
WHERE |
This spot may be a bit hard to reach, but leave the D30 to the west where D30 and D230 bump into each other just north of the 25 arrival path. Follow this little farmer road called “Inistien” to the west first, which becomes south soon. Pass a forest line and some housings, before you reach the airport fence/arrival path again and search your favourite position around there.
|
WHAT | Arrivals on runway 25. |
TIME | Only useable in summer on late evenings. |
MISC. | You are very close to the fence here, so keep a very low profile! Nothing around. |
FOCAL LENGTH | 70-200mm Dassault Super Étendard = 150mm |
Spot #3 – D32 – 07 Arrivals + 25 Departures | |
---|---|
WHERE |
South of the 08 Arrival path just after the D32 made a curve and runs northwards now, there is a little treeline the street crosses. Just before these trees you have farmer roads on both sides, where you can leave your car by the roadside without blocking anything and search your favourite positon around here.
|
WHAT | From here you can see 07 Arrivals as well as heavy 25 Departures. |
TIME | Useable all day in winter, in summer from later morning till afternoon. |
MISC. | Nothing around, not even easy parking spots. Getting rid of your car is very tricky here. Best is to leave it by the streetside on the farmer roads, but take care not to block anything! |
FOCAL LENGTH | 200-500mm Falcon 10 = 400mm / C135 = 420mm |
Spot #4 – Poulhoat Eozen – 07 Arrivals + 25 Departures | |
---|---|
WHERE | North of the 08 arrival path, turn off D32 to the east into a little street called “Poulhoat Eozen”. This leads you to a little forest part close to the fence, from where you should have a nice view. Park your car by the roadside without blocking anything and search your favourite positon around here. |
WHAT | From here you can see 07 Arrivals as well as heavy 25 Departures. |
TIME | Only useable in summer on late evenings. |
MISC. | Nothing around, parking is a bit tricky here. |
FOCAL LENGTH | — |
Unluckily we cannot provide any example pictures from here yet, please get in touch with us if you can help out here!
Spot #5 – Keroudot – 25 Departures | |
---|---|
WHERE | North of the airfield, you will find the village of “Keroudot”. Make your way to its northeast and take a little road with the same name to the southeast then. This will pass some fields and treelines on its way to the fence, where you can easily stand with your car by the roadside (DO NOT BLOCK THE GATE) and can just hop out for movements quickly. |
WHAT | 25 Departures only. |
TIME | Only useable in summer on late evenings. |
MISC. | Fence is very low and close here so you do not need a ladder, which is not recommended here at all! Police already checks without here often! Keep a low profile! |
FOCAL LENGTH | 100-400mm AWACS = 250mm |
I have been there today. But a lot of movements I must say. Point 1 not good at all. Planes are too high. Point 5 good, point 4 very very good. I strongly recommend point 4.
