Aasiaat Airfield (JEG/BGAA) is a small airfield in the west of Greenland. The Airport is located 2km (an hour walk) outside town of Aasiaat and is served by Air Greenland DHC Dash 8 or Airbus Helicopter H155 (supported financially by the government) a few times a day leading up to ~25.000 passenger a year. At spot 3 you will also often be able to see humpback whales coming up for air in the fjord.

Airport Information | |
Runways | |
11/29 | 800m |
Terminals | There is only one small facility handling all operations. |
Spotting information | |
Ladder | Useful for spot 2, but probably hard to bring/organize. |
Car/Public Transport | No public transport available, either you walk or rent a car/try to get a ride. |
Drinks/Food | No shops/restaurants at the airport. |
Hotels | No hotels at the airport. |
Season | Obviously summer comes around with way better weather, but be aware of mosquitoes at that time of the year. In summer the sun does not set but will be directly against you at midnight. |
Security | Spotting and criminality is no problem here. |
Runway Usage | |
11/29 | Because of the small amount of traffic, airplanes can fly in and out like they want as long as the wind is not too strong. |
Spot #1 – Bench on the hill – 11/29 movements + apron | |
---|---|
WHERE | This spot is a small bench up on a hill west of the terminal (apron). It is very easy to find and to use. |
WHAT | From here you can see all runway movements plus the ones on the apron. |
TIME | Best before noon. |
MISC. | Nothing around, no shops, no shadow. |
FOCAL LENGTH | 50-200mm Aircraft on runway = 160mm |
Spot #2 – Airport Parking – 11 movements + apron | |
---|---|
WHERE | Here you are standing in the airport‘s small parking lot and do shoot directly at the fence. |
WHAT | 11 movements plus the ones on the apron directly in front of you. |
TIME | Best before/around noon. |
MISC. | You have to shoot thru/above the fence, which is 2 meters high. Ladder/car useful to clear your view or you can go back a few steps. |
FOCAL LENGTH | 25-150mm Aircraft on runway = 95mm / Aircraft on apron directly in front = 25mm |
Spot #3 – Hiking trail – 11/29 movements | |
---|---|
WHERE | The last spot is no real/exact position rather the area along the fence where a small hiking trail is running. Just climb the rocks at the terminal and walk eastwards. You can choose/stand wherever you want along here… |
WHAT | From here you can see all aircraft movements on the runway in both directions. |
TIME | Morning till early evening. |
MISC. | The fence here is not the typical airport fence rather just three wires you can overlook easily. Wear solide shoes! |
FOCAL LENGTH | 70-200mm Side on shot = 100mm / Shot from the front = 165mm |
