New Plymouth Airport (NPL/NZNP) is a small regional airport located south of Auckland in the northern center of the northern Island of New Zeeland. The airfield serves some daily flights to bigger cities like Auckland with Air Newzeeland ATR72s or Dash 8s. The airport handles roughly 400.000 passenger a year, but is also home to quite a bit of general aviation.
Spotting at New Plymouth Airport is a bit difficult as you cannot access the area north of the runway which would be offering good light. The street to the east from the terminal is closed off by a crash gate and can’t be accessed, while the street to the west is marked with signs “authorized vehicles only”. That’s why spotting is tough here, but the two spots presented below work quite nicely as well.
