Trondheim Lufthavn (TRD/ENVA) is the 4th busiest airport in Norway, serving 4.4 million passengers in 2018. The airport is 19km outside Trondheim city and serves the Tronderlag region with an international airport. Using two terminals (Terminal A and Terminal B) the airport handles this international traffic. Terminal A is the larger terminal and only operates domestic flights around the country for a handful of airlines. Like SAS, Norwegian and Wideroe. While the B terminal handles all international traffic the airport receives, with the likes of airlines such as KLM, Wizz air, Airbaltic (soon). SAS and Norwegian also operate a few international flights from this terminal. All traffic use the airports one runway 09/27, which is 2,999 meters long (9,839 ft). The airports two former runways 14/32 and 18/36 have been closed since the new runway opened. This is because of their age and length (both runways being less than 1,500 meters long (4921 ft).

Spotting Information | |
Ladder | Not needed in any locations, however could be useful in spot #5. |
Car/Public Transport | Public transport is easly accessible from the majority of locations and can be cheaper than pay for parking. On weekdays trains depart and arrive at the Airport every hour, on weekend the train reduces in frequency to every second hour. Busses depart even more frequently, however are more expensive that the train. |
Restrooms | Restrooms are available inside the terminal. |
Drinks/Food | Food and Drinks can be purchased at multiple locations inside the terminal aswell at “Shell Værnes”, marked on the map as Shell Shop. The nearest restaurants are located in Størdal. |
Hotels | The closest hotels to each spotting location and airport are Scandic Hell and Radisson Blu Hotel. |
Season | Weather in Trondheim can be challenging In the summer there is the highest chance for blue skies and strong light. However in the summer heat haze is a problem (if taking photos of aircraft far away from your location). In the winters in Trondeim the weather can be extremely unpredictable, with rain and snow the majority of the time and the 4-6 hour long days, getting outside before it is dark in faverable conditions requires some planning. However due to the shorth period of day light, golden hour lasts from sunrise to sunset and is a very strong golden color. Our recommendation for days to go spotting is the coldest days, usually the sky is clear and there is now snow or rainfall. However be prepared, wear a lot of clothes and have gloves on at all times to keep yourself safe. |
Security | Normally there are no issues with security as they are understanding of the hobby. We stopped by Spot #2 by police on a few occasion to talk. However be aware if using location #2, it has happened that bypassers walking through the tunnels have called the police. Airport security will then come and speak with you, please be polite and understanding. The worst that will happen is they ask you to choose another location. |
Runway Usage | |
09/27 | Being the only operational runway at the airport, all arrivals and departures use this one runway. Due to wind conditions at the airport, majority of the time runway 09 is used for operations. |
Spot #1 – Spotter Plattformen – 09 Arrivals/Takeoff Roll, 27 Departures
|
|
---|---|
WHERE | On the north side of the runway, directly to the right from E6. To get there by car, follow E6 towards Strørdal ans take the first right after the tunnels. Follow E14 for roughly 400 meters and take a right in the roundabout (Meiervegen), then take another right (in 30 meters) onto Værnesgata. Follow Værnesgata all the way to the end where you take a left onto Innherredsvegen. Follow this road for roughly 350 meters until the fork in the road. Where take a right hand turn and continue along the same street. You will cross a railroad bridge, after that bridge take a sharp left onto that street, you can drive the entire way down to the trees (and park there). Or you can take a left onto the gravel path, you may park anywhere along that path. Occasionally you may see the cars of other spotters, just make sure you don’t block them in. To get here by foot, take public transport to the airport (Train or bus). Follow “Lufthavnveien” towards the Shell gas station. Cross the railroad bridge and continue walking along this path past locations #2, #3 and #5. After walking through the tunnels (which pass under taxiway Y1 and Runway 09). Take a right onto the gravel path and there you will see a fullly built platform. |

It is difficult to explain how to get there from both locations so, please see the map where I have drawn the route to walk. |
WHAT | From here, only 09 arrivals are visible. |
TIME | This location works year round, from sunrise to mid afternoon. Be aware of the massive heat distortion in the summer due to the long distance. |

Spot #5 – Eastern End rwy27 arrivals | |
---|---|
WHERE | Follow the road E14 through Stjørdal and turn left towards “Karosserifabrikk” and “Skole”. Follow the road until the end and turn right towards “Mælen bru”. When passing the landing lights, continue up the hill and park by the church. Walk back and pick your preferred spot by the landing lights.
By public transport, the best option is to take the train or bus to Stjørdal station and walk to the spot (it’s a 30-40 min walk however). |
WHAT | Only runway 27 arrivals can be seen from here, while the aircraft are in the air. As you are standing lower than the runway here, you won’t see the aircraft on the ground. |
TIME | Best from around 13:00 until sunset all year around. |

WHAT | Departures from 09 may be seen from here. You’re not able to see the airport, so a radio scanner or access to fr24 will be useful in order to know when the aircraft are departing. |
TIME | Most of the day, from early morning to late afternoon (until 19:00). As the aircraft are rather high at this point, the light is not great during the summer months, so this spot is best in the winter, late autumn and spring. |
