Billund Airport (BLL/EKBI) is one of the busiest hubs for aviation in denmark due to its remarkable cargo and charter traffic. Nevertheless BLL also offers few regular flights to tourist and city destinations around Europe and welcomed 3.5 Mio. passengers in 2018. Also worth mentioning is the mainly ATR maintenance area. EKBI serves partly as hub for Jettime, DAT and Sun-Air of Scandinavia and handles 3.5 million passenger a year.
The airfield was originally opened 1961 when the Legoland founder’s family opened a private strip first.

Airport Information | |
Runways | |
09/27 | 3.100m/10.172ft – Asphalt |
Terminals | A small terminal in the north receives all passenger flights, in the south you also have some storage/maintenance facilities plus a cargo center. |
Spotting Information | |
Ladder | Surrounding area sometimes a bit hilly and fence holes quite wide so a ladder is not absolutely needed, might be helpful to avoid dark corners sometimes though… |
Car/Public Transport | A car here is recommendable, although some urban transport is available around the airport due to the near city center. |
Restrooms | In the terminal are all the Restaurants, hotels around here. |
Drinks/Food | In the terminal are all the Restaurants, hotels around here. |
Hotels | The best hotel for watching the ramp action is the Sleep Hotel Billund Airport, just a short hump from the terminal. View from rooms facing east looks like this. Huge offer in the city and the nearby funpark. |
Season | Nothing special as the climate is almost the same throughout the year, although you may have some charters sometimes (skiing or holiday seasons for example).
Summer is better for freighters, winter better for the storage aprons. |
Security | Photography locations here are quiet, and airport security doesn’t care about spotters except some wanna be important staff. |
Runway Usage | |
09/27 | The use of the runways depends on the direction of the winds that can change at any given time. |
Spot #1 – Spottermound | |
---|---|
WHERE | This spot is located west of the main passenger terminal which can be reached within 10 minutes from here. Just leave your car nearby or at the airport parking which is supposed to be free of charge and come to/climb this kind of spottermound. |
WHAT | You can see the whole apron and nearby taxiways. |
TIME | Afternoon and evening. Almost unusable in winter. |
MISC. | Nearest facility for food, drinks and restrooms is the terminal next door. |
FOCAL LENGTH | 150-400mm |
From next to the cars there…
Spot #2 – AS Support | |
---|---|
WHERE | If you wanna spot some aircraft on the Air Support apron, this spot is the right one. Just next to the fence on the green meadow there it is both easy to find and mostly no problem. Just get rid of your car nearby. To get there from the airport follow the signs to “cargo/legoland” and after you have passed the entrance to the fun park turn left into “Firhøjevej”. After you have passed the ATR maintenance (spot3) turn left to get to the AS support building. |
WHAT | Air Support apron so mainly parked/stored aircraft. |
TIME | In winter all day, in summer morning till afternoon. |
MISC. | Ladder still not absolutely needed as you can photograph through the mesh, but recommended. You are on private propterty so if Air Support staff should appear, definitely ask for a permission to take some shots and you‘ll always get it as long as you are friendly! Nothing around except airplanes. |
FOCAL LENGTH | 24-70mm |
Spot #3 – NAC | |
---|---|
WHERE | As easy as the previous one: Just right by the fence infront and along the apron where all the ATR aircraft are parked. |
WHAT | From here you can spot the NAC apron, which is mainly occupied by ATRs. |
TIME | In winter all day, in summer morning till afternoon. |
MISC. | Ladder still not absolutely needed as you can photograph through the mesh, but recommended – but take care, the security doesn‘t like to see ladders along here and they pass by regularly.Nothing around except airplanes. |
FOCAL LENGTH | 16-35mm |
Spot #4 – Meadow | |
---|---|
WHERE | This spot can be found very easily as well as it is all the area around here on the grass. Just continue on Firhøjevej from the previous locations eastwards. Nothing more to say except the fact that parking is very easy here right next to you. |
WHAT | Aircrafts landing on runway 27, taxiing to 27 departure, low departures from 09 or „late vacators“ after landing on 09. |
TIME | In winter all day, in summer more likely in the morning than in the afternoon/evening. |
MISC. | Nothing around except airplanes. Ladder is useful, otherwise you need to photograph through the mesh. |
FOCAL LENGTH | 250-400mm |
This is how the meadow looks like roughly (panorama obviously set together as you can see in the middle):
Be advised, that at Spot 2 i recently got sent away with the reason that this is private property
spot 4 you dont need a so big objektive, you can take good pictures with a 200mm objective

Just spoke to someone from airport Security today regarding ladders and distance to the fence. They want you to stay a minimum of 3 meters from the fence, then they dont really mind.
