London City Airport is an international airport located in the Royal Docks in the London Borough of Newham. It lies approximately 11 km (7 miles) east of the City of London, and just to the east of Canary Wharf. Together, the City of London and Canary Wharf form the twin centres of London’s financial industry, which is a major user of the airport.
Detailed planning permission for the airport was granted early in 1986. Construction began shortly afterwards and the first commercial services started operating in October 1987.
London City has a single, 1,500 metre long runway and its licence only allows passenger transport and related training flights. Only multi-engine, fixed-wing aircraft are permitted, and the aircraft and aircrew must be certified to fly the steep 5.5 degree approach path required to operate into the airport. The largest aircraft currently certified to use the airport are the Bombardier CS100 and the Airbus A318.
London City Airport served over 4.3 million passengers in 2015. This was an 18% increase over the previous year and a record total for the airport. It is the fifth busiest airport serving the London area, after Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton.
BA CityFlyer is the largest user and there are currently fifteen other airlines operating into to airport, albeit that several of them provide a service on behalf of other carriers.
The airport is closed between midday on Saturday and midday on Sunday, so this is not the place to visit on a sunny Saturday afternoon!

Runways | |
09/27 | 1,500m (4,900ft) |
Terminals | The airport has a single two storey passenger terminal serving all traffic. |
Spotting Information | |
Ladder | Not needed at any of the locations. |
Car/Public Transport | Not necessary. In fact, at £23 for between thirty minutes and four hours, the long stay car park is very expensive indeed. It’s better to use the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) which serves several stations in the area, including London City Airport and King George V stations near Spot #1, as well as Cyprus station near Spot #4 and Royal Albert station near Spots #5 & 6. The 474 bus route also serves the airport and passes Spots #2, 3 & 4. If you do need to drive, it’s better to park free at Spot #3 or Spot #5 and use public transport to get to where you want to be. |
Restrooms | In the airport terminal for Spot #1. As this is a largely residential area, there are some cafés, pubs and restaurants near most of the other spotting locations. |
Drinks/Food | In the airport terminal for Spot #1. There are cafés, pubs and restaurants near most of the other spotting locations. |
Hotels | As well as the very reasonably priced Metro London City Airport near the terminal, there are other hotels at the the western end of the airport and several more to the north and west of Spot #5. |
Season | As it caters mainly for business related traffic, London City Airport traffic levels remain fairly constant throughout the year, although summer does see some extra traffic to typical holiday destinations, and the winter schedule provides an increase in the number of flights to skiing destinations such as Geneva, Zurich and Milan. However, these extra flights are generally laid on by the same airlines who operate regularly here, i.e. British Airways, Swiss and CityJet. Therefore, the longer days and hopefully better weather during the summer months may be the deciding factor in terms of when to visit. |
Runway Usage | |
General Info | There is no preference for either easterly or westerly operations so the runway end in use will depend entirely on the wind direction. However, as the prevailing winds are westerly, 27 is likely to be in operation approximately two-thirds of the time. |

Hi Julian
I visited LCY in June 2024 and can positively confirm that spot 3 is now unaccessible. The site is completely blocked off and secured. There is no work at all, the site is derelict so the”few months” is a red herring. I suggest it will remain unusable for several years if not ever.
Hi Ian, that’s really sad as it is such a nice location! Thanks for the update.

Hello,
Am planning some hours of spotting here in May while being based near Terminal 4. How should i get here by underground from T4 please?
Thanks, Mario
Hi Mario, take the Piccadilly line to South Kensington station, then change onto the District Line to West Ham station. Finally, change onto the DLR to Cyprus station, which will put you at spot 6. Hope this helps.
The most convenient and fastest option should actually be the Elizabeth line from Terminal 4 towards Abbey Wood, get off at Custom House and change to the DLR which is right next to the Elizabeth line station to get the last few stops to Cyprus on the DLR. Should take you 1:20h compared to 1:40h using the tube
I did just that thanks. Got down at the Royal Albert stop and stayed on that side for an enjoyable three hours. Its a great location, also with great views of aircraft on finals to Heathrow
Hi
Can anyone tell me if the view is any good from the windows of the Travelodge here (in rooms on the correct side)? We are staying a couple of nights and my autistic son loves watching them take off and land. Thanks
Any word on whether spot 3 is accessible these days?
Spot 3 unfortunately cannot be accessed anymore. Went today and there is a building site there now, with security manning the start of the access road (with private property signs). Asked security how long its been like that and they responded saying a couple months.
Thank you for the Update. A note has been left on the guide.

Hi there. Plan to visit in May. Is Spot 2 still usable please?
Should be, yes.
Hi there, spot 1 is now completely unusable due to the taxiway expansion and the new blast fences. Spot 3 is now partially in useable due to the landing gear being blocked by a little border fence. Cheers!
Thanks, note added to #3. Sure about #1?
Hello there!
Is it possible to make some good looking nightshots from the area around spot 5 or are the planes not vissible/lit up from there or 400mm aren’t enough?
Thanks a lot in advance!
Thaddäus Klein
Hi, yes that should be possible for the ramp with 400mm but keep in mind a few things. There is a lot of ground equipment moving around, light poles and other stuff blocking the view. Last flights taking place around 21-22 so you should be there no in the summer.

Has anyone gone to spot 5 or 6 ? is it still accessible and for how long parking is free?
I went to the dockside spots (4 and 6) last week and it looks like a bigger fence has now been put up the full length along the car park, so it didn’t look like any viewing from spot 1 would be possible to me as that area has now been turned into additional parking stands and the new taxiway. I didn’t actually go to the car park to verify this though.
